German figurative art saw the emergence of movements such as Expressionism and Surrealism, which explored the depths of human experience through emotional and symbolic painting.

Paul Klee (1879-1940), a German painter with Swiss citizenship, associated with artistic movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Klee is known for his unique and innovative style, which combined geometric forms, vivid colors, and abstract symbolism. He developed an approach to art that integrated music and poetry into painting, considering the act of creating artwork as a process similar to musical composition.
Klee’s works often evoke imaginary and surreal worlds, populated by fantastic figures and enigmatic landscapes. 

Otto Dix (1891-1969) served as a soldier on the Western Front during World War I, and this experience had a profound impact on his life and art. After the war, Dix became one of the leading figures of the artistic movement known as “New Objectivity” (Neue Sachlichkeit), which sought to depict objectively and realistically the daily life of post-war Germany.

Max Ernst (1891-1976) is known for his extensive experimentation and ability to combine diverse artistic techniques to create unique and visionary works. Among his most famous techniques are frottage (which involves applying color to an object and then pressing the paper on it to capture its texture) and grattage (scraping the paint to create textured effects).
Ernst often explored the human subconscious and the irrational through his work, creating dreamlike and strange images that elicited a range of emotions and interpretations.

Werner Tübke (1929-2004) was a German painter known primarily for his monumental works and murals. Tübke was known for his technical mastery and his ability to manipulate perspective and spatial depth in his works. His style was eclectic, combining elements of realism, surrealism, and symbolism into a single artistic vision. His paintings often featured a wealth of detail and bold use of color, creating visually captivating and engaging compositions.

Among the artists recommended to me is also Georg Baselitz (born in 1938 and still alive).

Baselitz is primarily known for his approach to image inversion, which involves painting human figures and objects upside down, thus challenging traditional conventions of representation. This process has become one of his distinctive features and has contributed to making him unique in the realm of contemporary art. Baselitz’s works often feature distorted figures, dark expressions, and a sense of existential anguish, reflecting his personal experiences and the challenges of German history. Many of his works address themes related to his German identity and his reflections on the history and culture of his country.
